Girls in Glasses
MiscAnime05/10/08Tirinus How we love girls in glasses, from the smart and shy to the cute and clumsy. A somewhat popular anime trope but apparently not all share this view.
It actually has been the cause of some annoyance, due to the stupid Hollywood stereotype that glasses are somehow undesirable. The geek to goddess transformation is nearly always carried out by taking off the glasses and letting the hair down to show even the most thick headed "she was beautiful all along". But what about the rest of us? Those of us who say she's better before, who are screaming out "Agh! Her beauty is ruined!"
You see, glasses are cute, and clearly superior. This is for a variety of reasons. I'm sure there's irony in using stereotype to combat stereotype but I shall continue. Glasses denote intelligence which is always desirable, and who doesn't want a smart person? Ignoring the stupid of course, to whom I shall leave the bimbos and airheads.
The intelligence which hints at interesting personality and ambitions greater then the weekend's activities. Not boorish and loud but carry themselves with a subtly which rewards the observant. Truly the best kind of unique, not the attention seeking "unique snowflakes" who in the quest to be different end up all the same.
Glasses also do something else, they draw the you to the face, towards glittering eyes so you can see them shine. Nearly always their most attractive feature. To this end many people suit glasses, the perfect frame for the face. They are as much a fashion accessory as anything else and with that label carry the millions of styles come with it. There is no way to justify not wearing them especially if you need them.
Despite these reasons, the idea that glasses are somehow bad is difficult to unseat. I blame Dorothy Parker, who over 70 years ago put it succinctly and in rhyme.
Men seldom make passes
At girls who wear glasses.
Dorothy Parker, Not So Deep as a Well (1937), "News Item"
Perhaps we should force a change,
Men often make passes
At girls who wear glasses.
