Vexillology
Misc23/02/09Tirinus Continuing the trend of completely ignoring the words anime and equation in the site's title I'm going to talk a little of Vexillology. As it turns out I didn't just make that word up, it refers to the scholarly study of flags.You see while looking at some some literature for the European Space Agency I had a chance to look at the flags of the member nations and saw that, they were rather boring. Sporting bold colours in simple lines and shapes it's hardly very inspiring.
Although, there are exceptions. The Union Jack combines three bold colours in a unique and subtle design, seeing as there is a right way to fly it. The flag of Greece makes an attempt at being interesting with bold colours combining a cross and stripes but isn't quite as interesting as the Union Jack.
Other nations distinguish themselves by featuring their coat of arms on their flag such as in the case of Portugal or Slovakia.
However, what is the most awesome flag in Europe? It is of course, The Red Dragon, Flag of Wales and kickass symbol. It is even claimed to be the oldest national flag still in use. It is a shame that the such an awesome symbol is not incorporated into the Union Jack, however, that could change.
While not in Europe, the flag of Mozambique deserves special mention, since it features an AK-47 and is the only flag to contain such a modern rifle.
